Abstract : The utility of terpinene-4-ol in the medical field.
Perpinene-4-ol is a colorless liquid alcoholic terpene endowed with a floral and spicy odor that is found in other essential oils such as Pine, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Nutmeg, Thyme, Marjoram.
With an average content around 40%, perpinene-4-ol is the main component of this essential oil.
The properties of terpinene-4-ol are directly related to its chemical structure and its alcohol function. Its properties are mainly: anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial powerful (Staphylococcus sp, Streptococcus sp, Hemophilus sp, Pseudomonas sp), antiviral, antifungal (Candida sp, yeasts), anti-infectious effect by activation of the white blood cells and activation of the differentiation of monocytes, anticandidosic (oral candidiasis) with anti-inflammatory effect (active against fluconazole-resistant Candida strains), anti-parasitic, anti-acne on Propionibacterium acnes, decreases the growth of human melanoma cells (M14) and induces apoptosis (programmed cell death), anti-tumor properties in vitro against aggressive murine tumors, mesothelioma AE17 and B16 melanoma, anticonvulsant, diuretic, hypotensive by vascular muscle relaxation.
One of the most important studies is on colorectal cancer. The results of studies suggest that TP4O (terpinen-4-ol) induces apoptosis in cells involved in colorectal cancer through the generation of ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species which is clearly the cause of cell death.). TP4O is potentially useful for the development of new therapies for colorectal cancer.
